What is Hydrogen?

Hydrogen (H₂) is the simplest and most abundant element in the universe. Unlike fossil fuels, it is an energy carrier – it stores and transports energy produced from other sources, rather than being an energy source itself.

Hydrogen can be produced from all kinds of energy sources: wind, solar, natural gas, or even nuclear power. However, in the Nordics, there is a clear agreement that all hydrogen we produce and use must come from 100% renewable energy sources – making it truly green.

When green hydrogen is consumed in a fuel cell, it combines with oxygen to produce electricity and heat. The only byproduct? Pure water. This makes it the perfect solution for sectors that are hard to electrify, such as heavy transport, steel manufacturing, and chemical industries.
